Civil Rights icon Julian Bond once famously said, “Violence is Black children going to school for 12 years and receiving 6 years’ worth of education.” While many educators call for less accountability in education, others remain steadfast about the responsibility of students, parents, teachers, and schools to achieve results—even with students in poverty.

Katharine Moana Birbalsingh the founder and headmistress of Michaela Community School, a free school built on high expectations and strong discipline. She joins us to discuss her no-nonsense approach to educating all children.

He is a lifelong activist and 20-year supporter of nonprofit and education-related causes. Stewart has served as the director of outreach and external affairs for Education Post, the executive director of the African American Leadership Forum (AALF), and an elected member of the Minneapolis Public Schools Board of Education.
