Citizen Education recently held a Twitter chat based on our belief that our children are #KidsNotCriminals and to discuss the state of school discipline issues and what successful reform would look like.
We had a great collection of stakeholders in education come together and chime in with their personal perspective on how discipline policies fail to serve the purpose they were created for, as well as thoughts on how to move forward.
Topics covered ranged from the stated goals of school discipline policies, to how and why the disproportionately affect students of color. Educators, parents and administrators shared thoughts on how implicit biases, lack of cultural competency and educators of color impact disciplinary action in schools.
