While many eighth graders are worried about their acne, Beau Shell, known to many as the Lil’ Ice Cream Dude, has not only started his own business, but he is also working toward raising $5,000 for 100 girls to attend a special screening of “A Wrinkle in Time” at Ciné.

The event is specifically marketed toward girls in fourth through eighth grade who are in the Athens area and are interested in science, technology, engineering and math.

“I got excited when I met Taylor Richardson at an event,” Beau Shell said. “She inspired me and also challenged me to host an event, and I wanted to host an event for girls to show them what representation is, like Taylor says.”

Fourteen-year-old Taylor Richardson recently raised $20,000 to send 1,000 girls to see “A Wrinkle in Time.” Last year, she raised $18,000 to send 1,000 girls to see “Hidden Figures.”

Vickie Shell, Beau’s mother, said Richardson is planning to come to the event in Athens, currently scheduled for Sunday, March 11.

“The whole event is going to be like a red carpet movie night,” Vickie Shell said. “There might be some special performances from some special guests. [The girls] will receive dinner, they get to network and be around Beau and the other kids. Also, there will be some college kids there who are engineers and science majors to talk to the girls.”
